It is believed that you can turn into a villain or a hero. This time, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain, this time in Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. Strong antagonist. The plot follows the comic-book storyline and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. There’s, of course, the quirky humour unique to director Taika Waititi. Love and Thunder is a standalone movie that does not compare to Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a vital part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his standalone films either missed the mark entirely or didn’t hit the bullseye. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a lousy entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a solid beginning. Yet, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 will be in everyone’s most-watched five MCU films. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika Waititi collaboration was a sign that expectations were at an all-time high ahead of the film’s release.
If Gorr (Bale) and Bale, who wants to end the existence of gods after having been let down by one, decides on attacking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god butcher by forming a team with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who has changed into Mighty Thor. The plot is simple, unlike in Marvel’s recent films, and the performances are excellent in this film. Hemsworth performs well as the character who is experiencing an emotional crisis in his midlife, however Bale and Portman stand out. To prove Bale’s ability as a director, the pre-title credits scene is. Gorr could be the next Thanos for an MCU which is in desperate need of good supervillains, and Bale has a distinct creepiness to the character, but there’s not a much more.
On the other hand, Portman, who makes her return to the Marvel world after having been absent from the previous two Thor films, will play the cancer-stricken ex-girlfriend who was chosen by Mjolnir. Since Marvel seems to be willing to hand over the roles of Hawkeye and, in the next few months, Hulk, to women characters, I initially expected the Mighty Thor to be a similar tick mark on the representation check list. The film tells a heartwarming tale about an astrophysicist who is able display her biceps on more occasions than one.
Marvel is known for its own flexing through the many cameos in this film. We also see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast with Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprise their roles as Thor Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor as well as Thor. We also get Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play and director, respectively. Waititi, who is now Ragnarok directed Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his favorite genre. It’s funny to look at the likes of a couple of noisy goats and Korg’s narration regarding Thor’s background. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie, Old Spice’s mascot, is introduced.
The running gag is that Thor wants to find his Mjolnir but is scared of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags, while effective, do so at the expense of genuine emotions, and reveal the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder examines all kinds of affection, from father-daughter relationships to complicated romances between distant lovers… There is an analogy between Gorr losing respect towards Rapu and Thor becoming disappointed with Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). There are all these ideas but…
There are numerous movie references like Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as Easter eggs. The image of Falligar, the god who died depicted directly from comic books. We can see Hemsworth sporting the first Thor costumes that comic book readers recognize. During a fight with Zeus, Thor reveals his true colours. We also see a tattoo saying “RIP Loki and the helmet of the trickster on the back of our Viking. The evil Necrosword is introduced , and it’s fascinating the different weapons shown as being able to control people, given the way Stormbreaker and Mjolnir appear to possess their own thoughts.
We’ve seen this before with the ten rings in Shang Chi, the magical bangle in Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade from the post credits scene from Eternals. The statement “Gods don’t empower you but they will empower to use you” from Marvel’s newest show, Moonknight, feels very similar to the real world. There’s a reference to Valkyrie losing her best friend in war and Korg falling in love with another Kronan man.
We’re reminded of Ragnarok’s colors in the initial portion, but the majority of the second part is set in the dark realm of black and white. It’s important to mention that the action scenes that are monochrome are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth as Thor will remain in the role for the foreseeable future, and it’s a relief to MCU people who’ve seen the first Avengers or sacrifice their lives or hang their heads.
